Camerons-Strachan-Yuill-Architects

An example of the architects' work

Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Luke Jackson

Three award winning architectural practices have joined together, with a shared commitment to carefully considered architecture and a personal service within the communities they serve.

Camerons Strachan Yuill Architects brings together the collective experience of Camerons Architects, Douglas Strachan Architects and Bain Swan Architects. The combined team has the capacity to deliver across a range of scales and sectors, from four offices; in Dalkeith, Galashiels, Edinburgh and Eyemouth.

The team will own the majority of the unified practice through an Employee Ownership Trust, and the practice will be led by two Managing Directors; Gavin Yuill and Douglas Strachan.

The three existing practices all have a proud history of local understanding and community involvement. Camerons Architects was established in 1963 by Duncan Cameron, who was also involved in the creation of Eildon Housing Association. This legacy was continued under the more recent leadership of Gavin Yuill, who set up the Yuill Community Trust to further innovate in the delivery of local affordable housing and is also developing a construction innovation hub in collaboration with DYW Borders.

Douglas Strachan Architects was formed in Dalkeith in 2012 and quickly gained a reputation for high quality design and personal service. Douglas is also the founder and chairperson the One Dalkeith Community Development Trust, for which he was awarded Business Ambassador of the Year by the Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce.

Bain Swan Architects has served the communities of South East Scotland and North East England for over thirty years, establishing a reputation for place making and conservation. This expertise and is carried forward, with trusted long-serving Bain Swan staff in senior positions within the combined practice.

Co-Managing Director, Douglas Strachan, said:

“The unified practice will honour the legacy of each preceding firm, whilst boldly striding forward and writing a new chapter. We remain committed to a local service for the communities we serve, enhanced by the larger team”.

Camerons Strachan Yuill has been formed with an Employee Ownership Trust, meaning the team running the business will hold a majority share of the company. The whole team will therefore pursue a positive ethos of shared endeavour, valuing everyone’s contribution and sharing in its success

Co-Managing Director, Gavin Yuill, said:

“Architecture based on people is what we do, but it is equally important how we do it. Our practice, as an EOT, will therefore be based on people with shared values, collaborating and delivering a personal service.”

Clients and other partners of the existing practices have been very positive about the move and the opportunities this presents. The practice looks forward to nurturing and developing these relationships as well as many new ones in the years to come.
