Restoration Yard Excellence Award

Buccleuch Property has been recognised for its commercial property expertise at the 2018 Scottish Property Awards, being named winner of the Architectural Excellence Award (Commercial Use) for its work at Restoration Yard, Dalkeith.

Awarded to companies who have created innovative commercial spaces through a combination of design, considered location, and good use of materials, Buccleuch Property beat off stiff competition from leading industry organisations to take the crown.

The multi-million-pound re-development saw Dalkeith Country Park’s 18th century, Category A listed stableyard, transformed into a luxury retail and leisure destination. Nestled in the heart of the Park, Restoration Yard houses a high-quality retail outlet, coffee bar, café, Wellbeing Lab, and a Sanctuary therapy room, neighbouring the excitement of Fort Douglas adventure playground.

In creating this unique space, Buccleuch Property had to carefully consider how to ensure the preservation and protection of the historic building, and enhance this to create a beautiful space, which would attract locals and visitors to the area.

Retaining and repairing original features wherever possible, the building has been designed to complement the array of surrounding listed monuments and vast landscaped parkland area in which it lies. Incorporating historic architectural features with contemporary extensions, Buccleuch Property framed the serene landscape internally through the use of floor-to-ceiling windows, which provide stunning views across the Park.

James Palmer, Associate Director at Buccleuch Property, said: “Since we first began working on Restoration Yard we have focused on one thing; protecting and enhancing a wonderful listed building to bring this back to life in a way which creates a world class destination for recreation and wellbeing.”

“We are very proud to not only have achieved this, but to also have been recognised by the industry for the dedication and creativity which went into this re-development. Through partnering our design ideas with the original features we wanted to retain, we have created a unique space which has helped reinvigorate the Estate and drive tourism to the area.”
