Midlothian Council has successfully applied for Scottish Government funding to build a new Mayfield School Campus and refurbish and extend Penicuik High School.

The projects are among 25 new education initiatives benefitting from £800 million of Scottish Government money.

Midlothian Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Jim Muirhead congratulated everyone involved in the successful bids. He said:

“We are delighted that the Mayfield community will benefit from this investment and improve the quality of the learning environments across the campus.

“As for Penicuik High, refurbishing and extending the building will provide new state-of-the- art facilities that will broaden the curriculum and open up more innovative and diverse pathways for our pupils.

“The Penicuik refurbishment will also expand pupil capacity and, after a catchment rezone, minimise future pressures on Lasswade High School.”

Councillor Muirhead said the plan would be to decant pupils and staff to the vacated Beeslack High School once the new A701 school is opened while the refurbishment was going on.

“We aim to create a secondary learning environment across Penicuik which is sector leading,” he added.

Project teams will be set up to take both projects forward. Parents, pupils and staff will be given more information when more details are available.
