Fostering with Midlothian Council is one of the best decisions Denise Adams has ever made, she says.

And she should know. Denise, who has been fostering for the best part of 20 years, moved from a private agency to foster with the council in 2018.

Denise says: “I’d recommend Midlothian to anybody. Everyone’s so supportive. They’ve been fabulous.”

No wonder then the council’s Family Placement Team has asked Denise to help launch its latest recruitment campaign.

Midlothian Council is always looking for foster carers. The pandemic has affected children in many different ways but their need for a loving, stable home has not changed.

Midlothian offer a number of care options; each tailored to fit in with the needs of the children, their families and you. Whatever your circumstances, you might be surprised how you can help and offer care to children looking for a home.

Denise, who also works in another job part-time, says of fostering.

“If it’s right for you, definitely do it. It’s a lot of work and a lot of commitment but I just love it.”

In the two decades she has been fostering, she’s seen scores of children arrive at her home frightened, sometimes neglected and always overwhelmed.

But after being in the care of Denise and her family, these same children leave, sometimes heading for university or college depending on their age, feeling loved, supported and much more ready to take their place in the world.

Denise says: “We’ve got a song we play in the car about how you can be anything you want to be. I tell them that all the time. Just seeing them doing well and coping makes me so grateful for having them. It makes you proud when they do well. They are part of our family.”

If you have a spare room, find out more about the joys and challenges of fostering with Midlothian Council, including the training and financial rewards, which are among the most generous in Scotland.
