Jo Cox MP

Colin Beattie MSP today expressed his shock at the murder of Jo Cox MP, who was shot and stabbed yesterday in Birstall, West Yorkshire. The murder took place shortly before Ms Cox was due to hold a constituency surgery.

Mr Beattie, MSP for Midlothian North and Musselburgh, commented:

‘This is desperately tragic news. First and foremost my thoughts are with her family and her Westminster colleagues.

‘Any right-thinking person will clearly be shocked by this attack on a Member of Parliament simply doing their job.

‘While most Parliamentarians across the country will now be reviewing their security arrangements, it’s important to remember these kinds of attacks are very rare. We must not fall into a knee-jerk reaction.

‘Democracy in this country is founded on the sound principle of accessibility to our political representatives. We must ensure that Ms Cox’s horrific murder does not result in a barrier between constituents and Parliamentarians. I for one will continue as normal.

‘Ms Cox was not afraid to speak out for issues she strongly believed in. Her name will now forever be synonymous with brave and open politics.’
