Aye Midlothian

Midlothian MP shows support for the Scottish Refugee Councils campaign ‘Aye Welcome Refugees.’

Midlothian MP Owen Thompson has also welcomed Midlothian Councils pledge to accommodate refugees in Midlothian as part of the UK Governments pledge to accept 20,000 refugees over the next five years.

The Midlothian MP has previously organised collections for Syrian refugees after being overwhelmed by constituents offering their help.

Owen Thompson said: “The commitment shown by the Council is the right thing to do and I commend their approach. Local authorities have an important role in the system of resettlement for asylum seekers and they are crucial to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of refugees whilst balancing the needs of local communities.”

“I am happy to support the Scottish Refugee Council in putting forward a positive message following last weeks attacks in Paris. Syrian refugees are fleeing the very people behind the attacks in Paris and Beirut. Now is a time for us to welcome refugees and not turn our backs on them, when all they want is to live peacefully and without fear for their lives”

Midlothian Council plans to accommodate approximately 40 refugees.
