SPAR Bonnyrigg Store to close

The SPAR store in Bonnyrigg is to close in October this year. This is a devasting blow to the town of Bonnyrigg as it follows the announcement a few months ago that the RBS branch is also to close.

In a statement, C J Lang, the SPAR wholesaler for Scotland, said:

“For many companies in the the retail sector, oeprating costs have risen significantly in recent years.

“C J Lang, the SPAR wholesaler for Scotland, continuously works to make sure these increasing pressures do not affect customers and levels of quality and service. Despite these best endeavours and the effort shown by staff, the store in Bonnyrigg is in a position where it cannot continue as a sustainable SPAR business.

“The company has given this deep consideration and has decided that the store will cease trading as of 1st October 2018.

“The decision to close a store has been a difficult one, but we will consult with Bonnyrigg employees and will do all we can to minimise possible redundancies.

“The Company is also working closely with the Post Office to try and find an alternative location for the Post Office in Bonnyrigg in order to maintain service to the local community.

“We would like to thank all our customers and staff for their loyalty and support over the 20 years we have traded in Bonnyrigg”

Locals have been quick to point out that RBS, in justifying their branch closure, said that customers could use the Post Office for their banking needs but now that will not be possible.

Bonnyrigg has grown significantly over the last few years so the lost of an important store, Post Office and RBS branch will mean that a lot of people will need to travel further to shop, post a parcel and bank.
