The sixth annual Senior Games in Midlothian took place recently and proved to be another inspiring success story involving participants from care homes across the county.
Drawing inspiration from the upcoming Olympics in Rio, the event at Mayfield Leisure Centre started with an unforgettable opening ceremony involving local piper Greig Mclean and mascot MacBear, who led the Rio seated Dance, especially created for residents in care homes.
Teams competed in nine events including new age ‘kurling’, tossing the caber, hunt the haggis and shuffleboard.
The winning care home team was Nazareth Navigators, from Nazareth House in Bonnyrigg, who lifted the top award, kindly donated by Browns Optometrists, for the third consecutive year while Aaron Allstars from Penicuik finished as runner’s-up.
Ladywood Leisure Centre was the venue on Thursday for the sixth annual Sheltered Housing and Day Club Senior Games.
This year’s winners were The Crystals from Crystalmount Sheltered Housing in Dalkeith while the runner’s-up were Bowman’s Warriors from Bowman’s View, Dalkeith and The Kabin Krackers from Loanhead finished in third place.
The opening ceremony was led by Brian Christer complete with an Olympic torch – sparking off another memorable event.
The two events were run by Midlothian Council’s Ageing Well project and were sponsored by the Spirit 2012, Legacy 2014 fund.
Viv Wallace, Midlothian’s Ageing Well co-ordinator said: “The events were hugely successful and thoroughly enjoyable – special thanks to our team of volunteers for their enthusiasm and energy.
“Congratulations to everybody, who took part – it was great fun and also really beneficial.
“It’s important for everybody within our local community to remain active, especially the frailer elderly community and in that respect the Senior Games wins the gold medal every time.”
