More than 500 properties in the Borders now have access to lightning-fast full fibre broadband.

The first properties which can now connect to GoFibre’s network are located in Innerleithen and Chirnside and these residents can now sign up to take advantage of speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Work is also currently ongoing in areas including Eyemouth, Denholm and Walkerburn as part of the first phase of the Project Gigabit programme in Scotland to bring gigabit-capable broadband to rural and hard-to-reach areas.

The build will also begin in Oxton, Jedburgh and Galashiels before Christmas. Over 1,000 homes and businesses will be in position to benefit from ultra-fast broadband ahead of Christmas, as the next stage of the Project Gigabit roll-out gets underway, with delivery led by Borders-born broadband provider GoFibre. Building work began in August.

Project Gigabit is the UK Government’s programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access lightning-fast, gigabit-capable broadband.

The Scottish Government is playing a key role in delivering Project Gigabit procurements in Scotland by administering and managing the delivery of the contracts.

Business Minister Richard Lochhead said: “It’s great to see GoFibre’s build plans for the Borders progressing bringing more gigabit-capable connections to rural communities, giving even more homes and businesses access to faster broadband.”

Once build starts in these areas, residents and businesses can register their interest online immediately at www.gofibre.co.uk to be first in line when connections go live.

Earlier this year, GoFibre was chosen to deliver full fibre to around 13,000 hard-to-reach premises in the Scottish Borders and East Lothian, as part of Project Gigabit.

Founded in Duns in 2017, GoFibre’s network already serves towns including Galashiels, Kelso, Melrose, Selkirk, Hawick, Jedburgh and Duns.

This latest expansion adds to the 22,000 Borders premises GoFibre already has ready to connect, providing speeds of up to 1 Gbps for seamless streaming, smooth remote working, and instant large file downloads.

Neil Conaghan, CEO of GoFibre, said: “We’re a Borders-born company, so every new community we connect in the region feels personal. It’s incredibly exciting to have the first residents in Innerleithen now ready to connect to our lightning-fast, ultra-reliable network. And adding over 1,000 homes and businesses before Christmas means thousands more people will soon have access to the kind of broadband that makes everyday life easier.

“We’re proud of our service and looking forward to bringing the benefits of full fibre connectivity to new locations, whether that’s video calls without freezing, streaming without buffering, or just having peace of mind your connection won’t let you down, full fibre is absolutely vital for local communities and businesses alike.”
