Plans for the £8.7m refurbishment of a Borders care home are to go public next week after the facility was saved from the axe.

The works will enable Deanfield at Hawick to provide a modern and compliant 20-bedroom care home.

The refurbishment work is planned to commence in September 2026 and will last approximately 18 months.

It will be carried out in a phased approach to minimise disruption to the service and residents.

The refurbishment proposal reflects a shift in care strategy for Deanfield, which had at one time faced closure over plans for a new care village in Hawick.

The updated model will include enhanced residential care, nursing care, and bed-based respite services.

Now Scottish Borders Council is to hold a public engagement session to share plans for the proposed refurbishment.

The drop‑in event will take place at Deanfield on Friday, February 27, 4–6pm, giving residents, families and the wider community the opportunity to view the proposed designs, learn more about the improvements planned, and speak directly with the project team.

Attendees will be able to review the refurbishment proposals, ask questions, share any thoughts or suggestions, and find out more about the project time-line and the expected benefits for residents and the community.

Members of the project team will be on hand throughout to provide updates and answer queries.

Approval to proceed with the refurbishment programme was given at the January full council meeting.

Plans include larger en‑suite bedrooms, improved internal circulation, and upgraded outdoor spaces designed to better support people with higher levels of need, including those living with dementia.

Councillor David Parker, SBC’s executive member for Health and Well-being and chair of the Integration Joint Board, said: “We’re delighted to be taking the next steps in our plans to transform Deanfield.

“The improvements we’re proposing will bring huge benefits for residents and ensure the home continues to offer the very best care and support.

“This engagement session is the first of many that will take place throughout the project as part of our commitment to making sure residents, families and the wider community feel fully involved in the journey.

“I’d encourage anyone with an interest in Deanfield to come along, explore the proposals and share their thoughts with the team as we take this important project forward.”

There is no need to book for the session, but if anyone has any queries or would like to provide feedback via email, please contact: ResidentialCareProgramme@scotborders.gov.uk
