Families throughout the Lothians have had a chance to organise a funeral journey that their loved one would have truly wanted since local funeral director William Purves launched their Defender hearse earlier this year.

“It was just right for Dad” said one of the first families to use the Defender. “As soon as we knew a Land Rover was available, we knew it was the choice he’d have made.”

The idea of director Andrew Purves, who was a life-long Land Rover fan himself, the hearse was a fusion of funeral needs with authentic Land Rover parts to create a bespoke and authentic vehicle. The funeral team commissioned South Queensferry specialists, Engine 710 and a donor 110 station wagon chosen for the right mileage, basic features and potential for upgrade.

The Land Rover Defender hearse is the first of its kind to feature a bespoke panoramic roof, a new chassis, customised low deck to allow a coffin plus a floral tribute to be seen, LED lights and a fully opening back door. Andrew said: “We’ve heard families say time and time again, if only we could take [their loved one] in a Defender or the car we really wanted would be a Land Rover.”

Defenders are part of the family. For owners past, present and even those who’ve just dreamt of having one, the possibility now exists for one final adventure. Families can choose a route and vehicle that was as loved in life as it is for that last goodbye.
