SAZ performing at Napoli World Music Festival
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
Celebrated Rajasthani folk trio SAZ will perform a short concert of music at the Aroma Restaurant and Bar in Broxburn in the evening of Saturday 2 May.
The concert is free, giving both diners and passers-by a taste of what’s in store, when they play Edinburgh Tradfest the following day.
SAZ is a Rajasthani folk music trio hailing from the Langa community of the deserts of Western Rajasthan. The group was born out of a love for their traditional roots, and their need to keep it evolving to ensure that younger members of their community can learn their music and keep it alive for generations to come.
SAZ has collaborated with pioneers of various traditions, honing and evolving an artform that is the lifeblood of their community.
They have performed all around the globe, from Jodhpur to the Lincoln Centre in New York, and this weekend the trio will descend on the Aroma Restaurant and Bar in Broxburn, as part of this year’s Edinburgh Tradfest.
The trio has a vast repertoire that encompasses centuries-old folk music, passed down over generations and is formed of Sadiq Khan Langa (Dholak), Asin Khan Langa (vocals and sarangi), and Zakir Khan Langa (vocals and khartal – two pairs of unconnected, flat and smooth pieces of wood). The name SAZ comes from the initials of their first names.
Asin Khan Langa from SAZ said “Get ready for vibrant and colourful music and songs from the Thar desert at the Indian restaurant AROMA in Broxburn. We, the Rajasthani trio SAZ, are excited to be presenting a pop-up performance for the patrons and friends of AROMA. Soulful and robust, ballads and Sufi sounds – it’s all on offer and truly unmissable!”
SAZ is one of three bands that will be popping up in different locations around Edinburgh during this year’s Edinburgh Tradfest (1-11 May).
Pop-up taster performances include:
– Astro Bloc at Edinburgh Airport on Thu 30 April, 11.30am
– SAZ at Aroma Restaurant and Bar, Broxburn, Sat 2 May, 6-9pm
– Dauntless at Nobles Bar, Leith, Fri 8 May, 2pm
SAZ will also perform a full hour long concert the following evening at the Traverse Theatre on Sunday 3 May at 18:30 as part of Edinburgh Tradfest.
