We asked Midlothian Council for an update on the roadworks on the A7 which have been causing traffic delays since the summer.

The A7 Urbanisation early delivery project in Midlothian is progressing, even though the council faced two major challenges:

– They had to switch back to traffic signals because of high traffic speeds.

– They discovered a large, uncharted sandstone seam, which meant extra hard digging, removing unsuitable material, and some delays.

By Sunday 23rd November the council aim to:

– Have removed all traffic control measures from the A7.

– Finished all bus stops and footpaths, including those connecting to nearby housing estates.

– Worked with Lothian Buses so the No. 29 route can start using the new stops.

– Completed the final setup of traffic signals and prepare bus shelters and real-time passenger information signs for the northbound stops.

Due to bad weather and shorter working days, the Council has decided to pause the project until spring 2026. This will give residents and drivers a break from construction. When they return, they’ll finish the link to the Tesco Roundabout as planned. In the meantime, a temporary surface will be laid so people can use the completed sections right away.
