Oregon timber frame
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly
A trade union has secured an above-inflation pay rise for more than 150 employees at a Borders-based timber company.
Selkirk’s Oregon Timber Frame designs, manufactures and erects pre-fabricated structural timber frames for housing, exclusively for its parent company, Barratt Redrow PLC.
Unite, Scotland’s leading union, has now secured an inflation beating pay rise for workers.
A basic pay increase of four per cent will benefit over 150 timber frame fabricators who produce kit houses for the construction industry.
Significant enhancements to conditions were also secured including the introduction of a company sick pay scheme and paid time off for hospital appointments alongside the restoration of a service-related bonus scheme.
Overall, the pay deal is worth 4.8 per cent – significantly higher than the current UK inflation rate of three per cent.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “A good pay rise has been secured but also important workplace benefits are being introduced. The overall package will see a significant boost to jobs, pay and conditions for Oregon timber workers in Selkirk secured by Unite.”
Unite industrial officer Esther O’Hara said: “The pay deal was overwhelmingly backed by the Oregon timber workers. It’s a significant win for Unite in the Scottish Borders.”
