Approval has been granted for the removal of the last reminders of a Borders bank ahead of its closure next month.

The Bank of Scotland at 8-9 The Square in Kelso is earmarked to close its doors for the final time on June 18.

Ahead of closure, Scottish Borders Council has rubber-stamped a planning application from the Lloyds Banking Group to remove the bank’s ATM and all signage, including the Bank of Scotland signs on the front and side elevation of the building.

A report with the application states: “The building occupies a visible position within The Square and contributes to the character of the surrounding commercial and civic environment.

“The existing ATM on the side elevation and the ‘Bank of Scotland’ signage on both the front and side elevations are modern additions associated with the building’s banking use.

“The proposal includes the removal of the side ATM, removal of the front and side elevation signage, and the careful reinstatement of the affected stonework to match the existing building.

“Following removal, the affected areas will be repaired and finished using materials that match the surrounding stonework to ensure the character and appearance of the building are preserved.”
