Deanfield Care Home, Hawick

A Borders care home set to undergo an £8.7m refurbishment after being saved from the brink of closure has won praise following an inspection.

Deanfield care home at Roadhead in Hawick was earmarked for the axe last year as part of a care village plan in the Stirches area of the town.

But after campaigning by town councillors the closure option was abandoned and today, Thursday, January 29, Scottish Borders Council was being asked to endorse a major refurbishment.

Now a Care Inspectorate report has praised the complex, saying people there experienced care and support with compassion “because there was warm, encouraging positive relationships between staff and people living in the care home”.

Deanfield has an upper and lower level.

Lower Deanfield has three units providing care and support for up to 20 older people and Upper Deanfield currently provides reablement support for up to ten people transitioning from hospital to home.

The home, which is operated by SBC, was rated ‘good’ for both its setting and for supporting people’s well-being following an unannounced visit by an officer from the Care Inspectorate between January 7 and 12.

It was deemed that the environment was safe, welcoming and well maintained, with clear plans in place to further enhance the setting.

However, it was found that support plans for those within Upper Deanfield “lacked clear, outcome-focused information”.

The report states: “The home had a relaxed, comfortable and genuinely homely atmosphere. Staff know people well and interactions were warm, friendly and natural.

“People spoke positively about their experiences, telling us ‘It’s like home from home; the staff are very good to us,’ and ‘staff are so friendly they go above and beyond to ensure our comfort’.

“These comments, along with what we observed, showed that people felt reassured and confident they were being cared for in a supportive and nurturing environment.”
