A Berwickshire councillor has heaped praise on the team behind a ‘masterplan’ for Eyemouth Harbour after £1.4m in funding was secured.

Eyemouth Harbour Trust has been awarded the funds from The Crown Estate’s Supply Chain Accelerator towards delivery of the technical work required for the next stage of its proposed £250 million deep water expansion.

East Berwickshire Independent councillor James Anderson has hailed the funding as “brilliant news today for Eyemouth and East Berwickshire” as he passed on his congratulations to the entire Harbour Trust team.

He said: “This is the result of real expertise, years of graft, and a board and staff who work seamlessly with the manager, harbour master and harbour crew. When people with genuine knowledge, experience and passion pull together, this is what happens.

“The £1.4m secured from The Crown Estate’s Supply Chain Accelerator is a massive vote of confidence in Eyemouth’s future.

“It proves what many of us have known all along: that our harbour has the potential to become a major hub in the UK’s offshore wind and marine economy, while still protecting and strengthening our fishing heritage.

“What excites me most is that this project goes right back to the vision of the best and most knowledgeable fishermen Eyemouth ever had, generations ago they imagined what our harbour could be.

“Now a new generation is picking up that ambition, using the most modern technology to make sure everything is absolutely right for the long-term future of our town.

“I’ve always believed something else too: the fishing industry will come full circle one day. When delivered, this expansion will create hundreds of jobs, bring millions into the local economy, and secure the place of our fishing industry for decades to come.

“This is the kind of forward-looking project Eyemouth deserves. Well done to Euan Scott, Christine Bell and the whole HT team. This is a huge step forward and a moment the people of Eyemouth and East Berwickshire can be genuinely proud of.”
