Hartree House, Biggar

Proposals have been submitted to repair the existing stone gate piers at an 18th century mansion near a Borders village after it was damaged in a collision.

The aim is also to widen the existing entrance opening at Hartree House in Biggar near Broughton.

Hartree House is a Grade C Listed, large stone-built mansion comprising three principal phases of construction: the 18th century, 19th century, and late 20th/early 21st century alterations.

A report with the application to Scottish Borders Council states: “The existing entrance piers and metal entrance gates have been damaged in a collision. The client therefore wishes to widen the opening to accommodate fire tender access.

“The existing ornate piers will be dismantled, repaired and rebuilt to align with the edge of the existing stone planters. The concrete paving slabs and tarmac are to be removed, and the drive cobbled using granite setts.

“The metal entrance gates are to be replaced with black composite wood solid panelled gates – height to match that of the existing – for enhanced privacy and security.

“Similarly, the metal railings above the low walls either side of the entrances are to be replaced with the same composite panels – in sections to accommodate the radius of the existing retained wall below.”
