Farmers, trades people and others in the Borders have been advised to take action after a spate of recent opportunist thefts.

The Scottish Borders is among the most targeted areas in Scotland for plant and agricultural equipment theft, particularly farm machinery, quad bikes and tools.

To combat this, Police Scotland and partner organisations have launched initiatives like Construction Watch Scotland and provided training on VIN CHIP technology to help prevent future thefts and support victims.

Owners are now being advised to take security measures, as stolen equipment can have significant financial and operational impacts.

Councillor Euan Robson, the Liberal Democrat leader on Scottish Borders Council, has stressed to constituents the need to protect vehicles, plant, equipment and tools from theft.

He said: “Following a meeting with Police Scotland in Galashiels last week, I am urging farmers, grounds and parks’ workforces and commercial and trades people to take preventive measures in relation to securing equipment and preventing opportunist crime.

“They can do this by ensuring that all equipment is secured when not in use, by removing tools and equipment from vans overnight or when on holiday, by utilising CCTV and having clear notices displayed warning of the presence of these security measures.

“Forensic marking of equipment and location trackers can be a very worthwhile investment both as a preventive measure but also to assist police in the return of stolen property to owners.

“This is something that was carried out in Coldstream recently where Police Scotland and partners offered the service to local businesses.”
Councillor Robson, who represents Kelso, added: “Crime Prevention advice is available by contacting your local Community Policing Team and from the Crimestoppers website.

“I am grateful to local officers for their vigilance and for the cross border working with police forces in England which has led to notable success in breaking up organised gangs and bringing offenders to justice.”
