Skilled workers with the Borders-based world’s leading manufacturer of tartan can look forward to a bumper pay day.

Unite, Scotland’s leading union, has secured an inflation-beating pay rise for Lochcarron Mill workers in Selkirk.

Lochcarron Mill is one the world’s leading manufacturer of authentic tartan and one of the few remaining textiles weaving mills in the Borders.

Now around 70 workers will receive a pay increase rising to 6.7 per cent.

The pay deal covers dyehouse labourers, winding and production operatives alongside darners, weavers, and tuners.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Unite has successfully negotiated an excellent pay rise for Lochcarron Mill workers. This will see a significant boost to jobs, pay and conditions for workers in the Scottish Borders.”

Unite industrial officer Pat Egan said: “The Lochcarron Mill workers are highly skilled and they produce unique products for domestic and international markets. It’s a pay rise which is worthy of their talents and Unite is pleased to have secured this deal for them.”

Lochcarron has a heritage dating back to 1892.

Unite Scotland is the country’s biggest and most diverse trade union with around 150,000 members.
