City Deal must move focus from Edinburgh, say Greens

Ian Baxter - Greens

Ian Baxter, Scottish Green candidate for Midlothian in next month’s General Election, is calling on the UK and Scottish Governments and Midlothian Council to work closely to ensure all of Lothian region and not just Edinburgh benefits from the proposed City Deal.

It has been reported that leaders from Edinburgh city council and surrounding authorities such as Midlothian and East Lothian have agreed plans to bid for a £1 billion funding pot from the Scottish and UK governments.

Ian Baxter is Midlothian’s only Green councillor, representing the Bonnyrigg ward, and has lived in Midlothian for 35 years.

“Since the demise of the coal industry in Midlothian, we have relied too heavily on commuting to jobs in the city centre. With large numbers of housing developments springing up across the county we need a sustainable transport system to complement the new Borders Railway. This would help a further need to develop our local economy, principally in knowledge based industries like at the Bush and tourism”.

“I see the City Deal as an ideal opportunity to develop a strategic approach to investment in education, sustainable transport, town centre improvements and protection of public amenity areas across the whole of the Lothians”.

The City Deal was reported in Midlothian View earlier this month, see HERE.
