Community organisations in Midlothian are set to benefit from new investment in local renewable energy projects thanks to funding from Great British Energy.
The National Mining Museum Scotland and Lasswade Community Rugby Trust are among almost 50 projects to receive support through the Scottish Government’s Community Energy Generation Growth Fund, backed by £4 million from Great British Energy.
The fund is helping communities across the country to install local renewable energy projects such as wind turbines and solar panels.
In total, community energy projects in Midlothian will receive nearly £100,000 of funding, helping local groups to take greater control of their energy generation.
The announcement was welcomed by Midlothian MP Kirsty McNeill, who said:
“This is fantastic news for our families and businesses. Folk in Midlothian voted for change and this is it in action – record investment in clean energy, giving communities the power to produce their own energy, cut bills and put money back into the local economy.”
Launched by the Labour Government, Great British Energy is a new, publicly owned clean energy company headquartered in Scotland’s energy capital, Aberdeen.
The company has already begun delivering its first major project – installing rooftop solar panels on hundreds of schools and NHS sites – helping to cut energy bills by hundreds of millions of pounds while reducing carbon emissions.
