Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve life chances – not only for individuals, but for the wider society and our economy. A strong education system leads to a skilled workforce, higher earnings, and a fairer society.
Recent figures have shown a rise in attainment across schools in Scotland. This is encouraging news which highlights the importance of investing in our youth. When we support our young people to reach their potential, the benefits are felt across society.
One driver of this progress has been the expansion of free school meals. No child should go to school hungry, and we know that children learn best when they are well-nourished. This helps with their concentration, improving their behaviour, their wellbeing and ensures no child is distracted by hunger.
In Scotland, all children in Primary 1 to Primary 5 receive free school meals, with plans to expand this further with trials for Primary 6 and 7 pupils ongoing in other parts of the country. I hope this pilot proves successful and we can expand across the country.
Compare this to England where school meals are limited to families who meet strict criteria.
Some may argue against the universal approach taken by the Scottish Government; however, I believe this fairer approach removes the stigma ensuring all children are entitled to the same provision.
Free school meals not only improve attainment but saves families hundreds of pounds each year, this is especially pertinent during the ongoing cost-of living crisis.
Whilst free school meals are not a cure-all it is a vital tool as we continue to improve our education system and outcomes for young people in Scotland.
Our young people deserve the best chance in life and that is exactly what the SNP Scottish Government will continue to deliver.
