Praise has been heaped on communities who turned on the style during the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships in the Scottish Borders.
Some fantastic shop window displays, town dressing, floral displays and signs welcomed the riders competing at Glentress Forest and the thousands of spectators that came to watch the best in the world compete.
Peebles business Castle Warehouse has been selected as the winner of the Borders-wide window dressing competition arranged by Scottish Borders Council and will receive a radio advertising package worth over £500.
Entries came in from businesses in Galashiels, Kelso and Melrose as well as Peebles and Innerleithen, with notable mentions also going to Treetop Toys, The Perfect Fit, Save the Children (Peebles), Head to Toe and Gustaf’s Studio and Gallery for their window displays.
Councillor Scott Hamilton, Scottish Borders Council’s executive member for Community and Business Development, said: “It has been wonderful to see our communities throughout the Tweed Valley and beyond get right behind the World Championships and celebrate the Scottish Borders hosting the world’s biggest ever cycling event.
“We’re now working to quantify just what the economic impact has been of hosting the mountain bike cross-country events at Glentress, and as part of that there will be surveys of accommodation providers and businesses.
“I’d like to thank all those businesses, community groups and individuals who got involved in welcoming the Championships and the many visitors to the area for their efforts.”
The Championship events at Glentress Forest were supported by Scottish Borders Council, Forestry and Land Scotland and South of Scotland Enterprise. Tweed Valley-based ESO Sports was the Championships’ event delivery partner for Glentress.
