Police carried out a joint operation to tackle shoplifting at Straiton Retail Park

Plans to install new illuminated signs on units at a retail park were described as ‘excessive’ by the local community council who raised concerns about light pollution.
Home Bargains have been granted permission to install the new lit signs for its store and neighbouring Garden World at Straiton Retail Park.
A report by officers, however, said Loanhead and District Community Council, who include Straiton in their patch objected to the plans.
The community council said the increase in the number and size of the illuminated signage would “add to an already well lit row of commercial premises” saying they believed they did not need to be as big as proposed.
They said: “We believe that a reduction in the size and number of illuminated signs will still allow the applicant to advertise their store appropriately.
“The shop front runs parallel to a main artery leading to the historical residential part of Loanhead and as such the community council believe consideration should be given as to how much illumination is considered
acceptable in this area.
“Excessive use of illuminated signage can be a contributing factor in light pollution.”
Planning officers said the units were in an established retail park which had numerous commercial premises and the new signs would not have an impact on the surrounding area.
Granting express advertising permission for the signs they said: “The site is within Straiton Retail Park. The proposed signage is in keeping with the
appearance of the building and other signage within the retail park.
“The signage would not be detrimental to the site or the surrounding area, nor would it have a significant adverse impact on highway safety as compared to the existing signage at the site.”
