After much speculation, Conservative Councillor for Midlothian East, Peter Smaill, has announced his support for the Save Kippielaw Campaign.

Since his election in 2017, Cllr Smaill has consistently opposed the idea of building either schools or houses on this green space.

Commenting, Cllr Peter Smaill said:

“I’m surprised that a single SNP councillor can weigh in to support the coalescence of Dalkeith with its proudly independent neighbours. It’s not consistent with policy for preserving community identity and was well known to be contrary to the strong opinions of the Community Council.

“They were not consulted at all before the Kippielaw farmland was thrown up as a potential site. Mayfield, through the council, is already offering land for hundreds of new houses to the south and west, proportionately more than any other area of Midlothian. So there is no need to add to the challenging 8851, plus new houses, we can expect up to 2037. I will vote against the idea come what may.”
