Midlothian Council Leader Councillor Derek Milligan says while he is disappointed, he understands the Scottish Government’s decision to keep Midlothian in Tier 3 of the COVID-19 protection levels this week.

However, he is hopeful of moving down to Tier 2 in the very near future based on the data, which is showing an improving situation.

Responding to the government’s announcement yesterday, Cllr Milligan says: “I want to thank local people for continuing to comply with the Tier 3 restrictions.

“It’s thanks to all of our efforts that the local data is showing a trend downwards and by continuing to take precautions we are hopeful we can safely move into Tier 2 in the next week or so if the data continues in this positive manner.

“Local infection rates are being monitored daily and I’m planning robust talks with the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland to make sure we make that transition asap.

“I can’t stress strongly enough the best way to get into Tier 2 sooner rather than later is for all of us to continue to do our bit by following the guidance.

“I’d urge everyone to keep sticking to the rules by, for example, socialising outdoors or in hospitality settings in groups of up to six people from two households, wearing face coverings picking up children from school, in shops, on buses and wherever advised and only travelling on public transport when absolutely necessary.”
