A new £4m McDonald’s outlet which will create 100 jobs in Hawick has received the thumbs up from Scottish Borders Council.

A planning application for the proposed fast food restaurant in Commercial Road has yet to be submitted.

But the local authority has issued a statement welcoming it and expressing delight at the plans which “mark a significant step forward in the town’s ongoing regeneration and economic development”.

A SBC spokesperson said: “Located alongside Sainsbury’s and Aldi, the proposed restaurant will increase choice and convenience for shoppers, while supporting local employment and investment.

“The project follows the completion of the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme, unlocking new opportunities for land use and business growth in the area. The new restaurant has the potential to create up to 100 part-time and full-time jobs.

“Scottish Borders Council remains committed to working with businesses and stakeholders to ensure developments like this deliver lasting benefits for the community, economy, and environment.”

Councillor Scott Hamilton, SBC’s executive member for Economic Growth & Developing the Borders, added his endorsement, saying: “The proposed McDonald’s development on Commercial Road is a prime example of how we can unlock new land for business growth, with the potential to create valuable local jobs, and enhance the services available to residents and visitors.

“Scottish Borders Council is committed to working with partners to ensure that developments like this deliver lasting benefits for Hawick’s economy and community.”

Regeneration of Hawick is continuing at speed.

News of the fast food chain’s proposals comes hot on the heels of the go-ahead for a new £450m Center Parcs village on the outskirts of the town.
