Councillors are being asked to approve an extra school holiday on Monday 24th October 2022.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the government announced that the day of her funeral, Monday 19th September, would be a National Public Holiday. However, Monday 19th September was already a designated school holiday day with all Midlothian schools and local authority nursery settings closed for the September weekend.

The proposal is to reschedule the pre-existing school holiday from 19th September 2022 to Monday 24th October 2022, which is the Monday after the Midlothian school half term week.

Schools have a staff development day scheduled for 24th October 2022 and so it is proposed that this would move to Tuesday 25th October 2022, with pupils returning on Wednesday 26th October rather than Tuesday 25th October 2022.

The appropriate permissions have already been given by Scottish Government to reduce the number of pupil days, should this proposal be agreed.

The Midlothian Negotiating Committee for Teachers (MNCT) have been consulted and are in full agreement with the proposals.

Councillors will decide the proposal at the Full Council meeting next Tuesday.
