A long-awaited meeting between RAAC campaigners and the Scottish Government had to be pulled at the 11th hour.
The meeting planned for Tuesday morning was postponed after the chair of the national campaign group, Wilson Chowdhry, sustained a knee injury.
Now members of the group, including Livingston’s Kerry Macintosh, are hoping for a new date to meet with Holyrood officials.
As the Local Democracy Reporting Service highlighted at the start of the week a national campaign is fighting for compensation for homeowners affected by crumbling concrete in their homes.
These homes are mostly former council houses or, like those in Livingston, homes built by the new town’s Development Corporation which was dissolved before the creation of the new West Lothian Council in the 1990s.
While West Lothian tenants, and those in other parts of Scotland affected by crumbling concrete, are having remedial work paid for by local authorities, homeowners face the anxiety and uncertainty of large bills to complete repairs themselves to homes which have effectively been rendered worthless.
The national UK RAAC campaigners have been promised a meeting with officials from Holyrood’s Better Homes department.
Ahead of the planned meeting earlier this week Mr Chowdhry told the LDRS: “Our campaign faces a pivotal moment. The confirmed meeting with Scottish Government officials is a key opportunity to advance the agenda, push for parity of support across the UK, and demand a public inquiry into the historic failings that have left thousands at risk. We will continue to press for:
– Pre-RAAC property valuations to restore affected home-owners to their rightful financial position.
– Fully funded roof replacement or remediation delivered promptly and without burdening households.
– A coordinated UK-wide approach, ensuring no home-owner is left behind due to postcode or tenure.
A new date for the meeting has yet to be announced.
