In the latest milestone for Edinburgh’s iconic King’s Theatre, the delayed development has reached ‘a hugely significant milestone’ after its new stage is built and put in place.
Welcoming actor Brian Cox as the first artist to step on to the new stage, the Honorary Patron and long-time supporter of the re-development was invited to the newly built stage, explaining that he was truly impressed by the scale and ambition of the transformation.
Facing significant delays, the theatre is due to reopen to the public in spring 2026. The completion of the new stage marks an important time for the Edinburgh landmark.
Fiona Gibson, Chief Executive of Capital Theatres, said:
“The completion of the new stage at the King’s Theatre marks a hugely significant milestone. After all, what is a theatre without its stage?
“It was a joy to welcome Brian Cox as the first artist to step onto the new stage at the King’s Theatre, Brian has been behind this project since the early planning stages.”
The new stage takes a modern design, replacing the original sloped stage which is a feature common in older theatres, with a flat stage.
Fiona Gibson explained that this new style opens up new artistic possibilities, particularly around dance and circus productions.
Despite delays, the progress continues at pace with installation of new staircases and lifts nearly complete. Alongside the completion of the stage, foundations for the new street-level cafe are now in place, marking a major step forward in creating a new space for audiences and visitors.
A new edition, The Creative Engagement Studio is also taking shape with final finishes in progress, and the installation of a new theatrical fly system complete.
Fiona added:
“When the curtain rises one again at the King’s in 2026, it will reveal a theatre that’s ready to welcome audiences for the next 100 years, sharing more ambitious shows, castle improved inclusive access for everyone throughout the building, and a stronger connection to its much-loved communities than ever before.”
