A Scottish charity is inviting fathers who may be spending Father’s Day without their children to come together for a supportive community walk in the Pentland Hills.

The Mark Williams Foundation’s Father’s Day Hike will take place on Sunday 21st June and has been created specifically for fathers who may be separated from their children, navigating family court proceedings, experiencing relationship breakdown or facing circumstances that mean they are unable to spend Father’s Day with their families.

While Father’s Day is traditionally a time of celebration, the charity says the occasion can be one of the most difficult days of the year for many fathers.

The walk will bring together dads for a relaxed and informal hike around Threipmuir and Harlaw Reservoirs, followed by food, refreshments and the opportunity to connect with other fathers who understand the challenges they may be facing.

Nicola Williams, founder of The Mark Williams Foundation, said: “For many dads, Father’s Day is spent making memories with their children. But for others, it can be a painful reminder of separation, loss or difficult family circumstances.

“What we’ve learned through our work with fathers is that many men simply don’t have spaces where they feel comfortable talking openly, meeting others or building supportive friendships. This walk isn’t about counselling or labels. It’s about connection, community and letting fathers know they don’t have to spend the day alone.

“Sometimes the most important thing is simply knowing you’re not the only one. This walk is an opportunity for fathers to spend time outdoors, meet new people and be part of a supportive community.”

The event forms part of the Foundation’s wider Father Support Initiative, which works to improve wellbeing, social connection and support networks for fathers across Scotland.

The charity believes preventative support and strong social connections can play a vital role in improving mental wellbeing, particularly during challenging life events and significant family occasions.

Research* continues to show that men are disproportionately affected by suicide, with around three-quarters of all suicides in Scotland involving men. The Foundation says events such as Father’s Day can intensify feelings of loneliness and isolation for some fathers, highlighting the importance of creating opportunities for connection and peer support.
