Dalkeith Pentaque Club celebrated their one year anniversary by hosting a melee that was attended by over 60 local residents.
Celebrating their milestone on Sunday the 17th, the only Pentaque Club in Dalkeith welcomed 12 local Dalkieth groups, including the Dalkeith Guerilla Gardeners, Dalkeith Arts, Dalkeith Twinning Group and local Councillors, alongside 8 other local community groups, who all took part in a Petanque melee competition that raised money for a chosen charity.
Hosted at the club’s grounds, the celebration raised £250 for the winners chosen charity with the competition winners, Dalkeith Museum, having a meeting to decide which local charity the money will go to.
Chairperson for Dalkeith Pentanque Club, Sandy Howden, explained, “It was an absolutely fantastic day for Dalkeith Petanque Club at the Community Piste and a great day for all the other 11 Dalkeith groups who took part in a great cause. Our 2 local fundraising melees are now written into the club’s calendar of events.
“It was a beautiful day with a whole lot of food laid on by members for all to eat in the sunshine as the games played out. A special cake was made for the event by One Dalkeith which was distributed among all the people who attended.”
This is the Petanque club’s second fundraising community melee, consisting of a large community tournament. With the club’s Community Piste (Petanque grounds) almost complete, Sandy Howden and his team are holding meetings with local Midlothian schools who are interested in using the free to play grounds 365 days a year.
Sandy explained that the club has “gone from strength to strength” this year, recently returning from a club trip to Dalkeith’s twinned town, jarnac, where they established a freadship with the French Pentanque club.
Completing three in house competitions alongside two melees which both raised money towards a local charity of winner choice, the Pentanque club has recently featured organised New Years Day and Anniversary meeles into their busy calendar. Alongside this, they recently completed their summer league, part of the Lothian and Borders Petanque League, and are hoping to host their first open competition in the coming months.
Their community anniversary celebration marked a successful first year as an established club and with events and fundraising planned for the coming months, Dalkeith Pentaque club are hoping for a second year as successful as their first.
