The First Meeting Centre In The Scottish Borders Welcomes People Affected By Dementia In Tweeddale

Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Paul Kelly

People living with dementia in Tweeddale now have access to a dedicated new community resource twice a week.

It follows the opening of the Braw Herts Meeting Centre at Cavalry Park in Peebles.

Launched by Dementia Friendly Tweeddale, a Scottish charity supporting people affected by dementia, the Braw Herts Meeting Centre provides a friendly, supportive environment for people with early to moderate dementia.

The centre also welcomes carers and family members, recognising the importance of supporting the whole family.

The Braw Herts Meeting Centre operates twice a week, offering regular and reliable support on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am to 12.45pm.

During each session, carers or family members are welcome to stay and take part.

Alternatively, this time can be used as a short period of respite, knowing their loved one is being supported in a safe and welcoming space.

Sessions at Braw Herts focus on enjoyment, inclusion and maintaining skills and confidence. Activities are designed to be accessible and adaptable to suit each individual.

The emphasis is firmly on having fun and helping everyone feel comfortable and valued. Participants are encouraged to join in at their own pace, with support from staff and volunteers throughout the session.

The meeting centre is also supported by local businesses. Sainsbury’s generously provides most of the food needed each week at no cost to the charity, helping to keep the service affordable and sustainable.

The charge to attend the Braw Herts Meeting Centre is £15 per session. This includes a light lunch. There is no charge for a supportive family member or loved one who attends alongside the person with dementia.

Anyone interested in learning more about the Braw Herts Meeting Centre, whether for themselves, a family member or someone they support, is encouraged to get in touch.

Please call Lynne on 07592 240448 on Tuesdays and Thursdays or email [email protected].
