Summer in Eyemouth has been an “absolute disaster” for cash-seeking townsfolk, a Berwickshire councillor has revealed.

There were high hopes back in May after a new cash machine was installed outside of the town’s Co-op, with the promise of access to cash 24 hours a day.

Eyemouth residents have long complained at the lack of access to cash in the locality amid the seemingly inevitable drive towards a “cashless society”.

But the hopes failed to materialise over the summer with the machine often running out of cash on Friday nights – and being empty over weekends.

Now East Berwickshire Independent councillor James Anderson has raised a complaint with ATM provider Link, which has promised to investigate the issue.

Meanwhile, Mr Anderson is considering taking the matter further.

He said: “After the fitting of the new cash machine at the Co-op in Eyemouth I had high hopes we would have access to cash.

“However, this summer has been an absolute disaster. I previously asked for the amount in the machine to be increased, however it seems to be lower than ever.

“We have had no cash over Saturday and Sundays for four weekends now. The machine runs out on Friday night and that’s it.

“The local annual festival who set up stalls and all sorts in the Co-op car park was a disaster when it comes to cash.

“The town had no cash on the main nights of the Eyemouth Herring Queen Festival with everyone scrabbling for cash back at the Co-op until they had to stop giving any out because they run low on cash.

“I have previously requested two machines and was denied, I gave time to LINK to see if the new machine would be enough and it has not been in any way shape or form.

“We have been totally let down and what I feared would happen, and voiced to everyone, has happened.

“I am making another formal complaint about the lack of service for East Berwickshire. But this time I will take it further if action to resolve this issue is not taken.

“We are not asking for a favour, we are demanding access to our cash and ‘no’ will not be an acceptable answer this time.”
