Initially, I anticipated (Dis)honest to be a true crime tale. However, as the story unfolded, it became clear that this performance was much more than just that. It masterfully raised profound questions about justice, morality, and honesty. The story not only charmed me with its suspense but also left me reflecting on my own morality and identity.
With inspiration drawn from the life of a con-artist Amy Bock, this originally written comedy-drama explores the big question: when do we stop pretending? What does honesty mean, where does it stop, and does it matter at all? Most importantly, how do you know who you really are?
The performance is presented as a podcast that both the audience and the characters on stage are listening to. Podcasts are particularly popular with many generations today, so the production team choosing this format will make this performance a sure hit for podcast enthusiasts.
The story starts with Amy working as a school teacher, but as the story unfolds and the jobs change, the show raises much more important questions about identity. It is often understood that our appearance, qualities, beliefs, and personality traits are what make you “you”. But who are “you”, really? That’s the question that lingered in my mind throughout the entire performance.
Six actresses primarily portray the central character, Amy Bock, but at various moments in the show, each one adopts a completely different persona, beautifully reflecting the central theme of identity. Our identity is ever-changing – we can be many different versions of ourselves, and that’s okay. We can embrace all of our identities, and still be the same person.
In conclusion, the show cleverly ties a gripping narrative with deep, thought-provoking themes about identity and honesty, leaving a lasting impression on its audience. The innovative podcast format, coupled with the exceptional performances by the cast, brings Amy Bock’s multifaceted character to life in a way that is both engaging and reflective.
I highly recommend this performance to anyone who enjoys a blend of suspense, humour, and introspection, as it will surely leave you pondering your own sense of self long after the final scene.
