MYPA Launch

A number of local Year of Young People 2018 Ambassadors help launch Midlothian’s Young People Awards in Midlothian Council’s Chambers, Midlothian House. Back Row: Sarah Barron, Depute Lord Lieutenant, Julia Ellison, Lifelong Learning and Employability at Midlothian Council, Aimee Gorrie, Mary Smith, Director of Education, Communities and Economy at Midlothian Council, Heather Fleming, Positive Destinations Officer at Midlothian Council. Front row: Isabella Newton, Neve Wilson, Jacob Caldwell and Yu-Lei Tan.

There is still time to nominate a young person for Midlothian’s Young People Awards.

The closing date for the awards, which recognise the contributions of young people to communities across the county, close on Friday 29 June.

To mark the Year of Young People 2018, Midlothian Council launched the awards in May with the Lord-Lieutenant of Midlothian.

Nominations for each of the five awards can be made by individuals, youth organisations, schools and colleges and employers.

Nominees should be aged between eight and 26 years old and must live, study or work in Midlothian at the time of their nomination.

A judging panel, which will include a young person representative, will then select winners for each award category.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony, hosted by Midlothian’s Lord-Lieutenant, Sir Robert M Clerk Bt, at Penicuik House on 31 August 2018. Each winner will also receive a prize on the day that they can gift to a Midlothian community group or local charity of their choice.

The six award categories reflect the various positive contributions of young people to Midlothian. The themes of participation, enterprise and regeneration are common in each of the categories. The categories are:

– Caring and Volunteering
– Local Community
– Sport and Physical Activity
– Arts and Culture
– Achievement in Learning
– The Midlothian Prize

If successful it is hoped the awards could become an annual event on the Midlothian calendar.

Midlothian’s Young People Awards are sponsored by:

– Dalkeith Country Park and Restoration Yard
– Hunters Coaches
– Procure Wizard

Nominations can be made online on the Midlothian Council website at www.midlothian.gov.uk/yoyp

Copies of the nomination forms will also be available in Midlothian Council libraries and leisure centres.
