ilston Glen Industrial Estate, Loanhead
Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Marie Sharp
A Scottish gin company has been given the go ahead to run its distribution base in Midlothian despite objections from a local community council.
Rutland Square Spirits had applied for a change of use of two commercial units at Bilston Glen industrial estate, in Loanhead, to provide office space for staff and a storage and distribution depot.
The company, which was established five years ago, produces artisan spirits including the world’s first Chai infused Scottish gin, and premium mixers.
Loanhead Community Council objected the the application saying demand for industrial work units locally outstripped the number available and allowing a change of use to storage would remove more.
However planning officers said that while its policy was to safeguard units at the estate for business use, rather than storage, the proposals from Rutland Square Spirits met the requirements.
They said: “The proposed use is justified in this location by the supporting information provided. The proposed development would support adequate levels of employment and would retain an existing local business within the region.
“The use would not result in a significant detrimental impact on the vitality of the industrial estate, and there would be no anticipated material impacts on the surrounding area.”
