An East Lothian golf club has been given the green light to move its clubhouse into a portable cabin in a car park for a year as houses are built on its original site.

Dunbar Golf Club has plans to build a new clubhouse as part of a development which is also seeing 78 new houses built on its land.

However in an application to East Lothian Council they say Cala Homes, who are building on the site, need to begin demolition now while the new clubhouse and additional pro shop and other facilities linked to it are not expected to be ready until later in the year.

They say: “The temporary clubhouse will be provided by Portakabin. It will be a simple, single-storey construction including a pro-shop, office, meeting space, storage, changing facilities and bar/restaurant area.

“It will include the thermal/insulation upgrade to enhance the building’s performance both to ensure members’ comfort, keep running costs at a minimum whilst also ensuring the optimum environmental performance.

“We anticipate the new clubhouse being open by the end of 2026 but have asked for longer to allow for flexibility should there be any further delays to the completion. Needless to say the golf club is eager to complete and move into the new clubhouse.”

East Lothian planning officers granted a temporary one year use of the cabin for the clubhouse saying the temporary buildings are already in place at an overflow car park which will be used by the new clubhouse once it is open.

Granting planning permission for the buildings, officers said: “In their position the temporary buildings are visible in some public views, however they are seen in the context of and in close juxtaposition with the housing construction site and the construction of the new golf club house to which they relate.

“A condition can be imposed on a grant of planning permission for the temporary buildings to restrict the period of their existence to one year.

“Subject to the imposition of this planning control the temporary buildings would not have any significant harmful impact on the long term visual amenity of the area.”
