Concern about parking on North Street, Dunbar, failed to stop short term let getting approval

Written by Local Democracy Reporter, Marie Sharp

A short term let owner has been granted a licence to operate in a narrow street despite concerns from neighbours about parking.

Sheila Dunn applied for a licence to rent out her terraced two bedroom home on Dunbar’s North Street, but licensing chiefs received two objections from neighbours.

In both cases they raised concern about parking on part of the narrow street outside their homes and bin lorries being forced to mount the pavement when vehicles were in the wrong place.

One elderly neighbour told the licensing board: “I’m an OAP and have enjoyed over 20 years living here knowing who my neighbours were.

“The new ‘visitors’ do not know the vagaries of parking in North Street where there are stretches where the road does not lend itself to cars being parked – you only know that from living here as the current residents do know, and are also aware of the days that the bin collections and recycling lorries come.”

Another added: “Parking has become quite a serious issue. Visitors park rather large cars at the narrowest point of the road. Refuge and delivery vehicles need to mount the pavement on the opposite side of the road causing alarm to pedestrians.”

A meeting of East Lothian’s licensing sub committee this week heard from a family representative of Ms Dunn who moved to reassure members that guests in the short term let would be made aware of the issues with parking and best places to leave their vehicles in the information packs provided when they arrived at the holiday home.

And they said they would ensure neighbours had contact details to raise concerns quickly should they arise.

Councillor John McMIllan welcomed the commitment to work with neighbours to deal with issues around parking and said if it was managed well he would have no problem with the home operating as a short term let.

The committee unanimously approved the licence.
