The sinkhole on Lamar Street, Dunbar

Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson

Last week, due to a breach in the sea wall, a sinkhole appeared on Lamar Street in Dunbar leading to the road being closed as repairs go underway.

Work to stabilise the area and prevent future deterioration commenced on Friday morning with good progress continuing to be made despite ‘extremely challenging’ weather conditions.

With a previous sink hole disrupting traffic and pedestrians appearing in 2023 slightly further along the road, the East Lothian Council are taking measures to prevent a sinkhole appearing again in the area affected.

Making steady progress, the road is still closed with work to backfill the hole taking place all week.

Tom Reid, Head of Infrastructure at East Lothian Council, said:

“Progress on repair works at Lamer Street is continuing to be made. Weather and tidal conditions over the last week have been challenging.

“I’m very grateful to both the council teams and AG Thomson from Dunbar for the partnership working on this for their efforts and to the local community for their patience and understanding. We look forward to providing a further update in due course.”

While there is not believed to be any disruption to customer utility supplies at present, council teams have monitored the situation, currently in communication with utility companies.
