East Lothian Mum's Walking Club
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
East Lothian Mum’s walking club was set up in January to help mums in the local area by providing mental and physical support through group walks.
The club has grown since its beginning now having 240 members, including experts in post and prenatal life, such as fitness coaches, yoga instructors, baby massage therapists, breastfeeding support workers, physiotherapists and clinical psychologists.
Started by a local Haddington mum, Sarah Noon, due to a lack of information during her pregnancies, she began the club following her 2nd child. Starting with a Whatsapp group looking for local mums in Haddington to meet on group walks every Thurday and Friday and serving tea and coffee from the back of her car, Sarah’s Mums club has expanded to 240 members, meeting up for walks and social events all over East Lothian.
Sarah spent a couple of months collecting local experts in an attempt to develop a pool of local people that can provide mums with care and advice they need surrounding post natal issues.
Speaking to Sarah, she highlighted the need for motherhood support groups, “What we tend to find nowadays is that the information we are given as a new mum isn’t always necessarily helpful, accurate or up to date. This isn’t the fault of anybody, it just is what it is and it needs to change.”
“There is a lack of care for mums, we very much concentrate on the baby, and quite rightly so. But there isn’t anything tailored in design purely for the mum. So we don’t really have any basic care which we should be getting and which should be standard, for example when we give birth we are more or less just chucked straight out the hospital”.
Highlighting that the ‘brain child’ behind the group came from the lack of support for mums, she set out to create a well needed community of local mums. Despite providing support for post natal mum’s they also support mums of all ages and stages of motherhood, pointing anyone in need of help towards volunteer groups or online information.
Receiving overwhelming support, the fast growth of the club highlighted a want for change alongside building a community of mothers to support and socialise with each other.
“We live in a day and age now that we no longer live in communities. For example we don’t really live in a world where all the mums are constantly together and we don’t have that village mentality when it comes to children”, Sarah explained. “So trying to rebuild that a little bit even if it is in my extremely small corner of the world is my way of trying to create that and give it back.”
The Whatsapp group, alongside Facebook and Instagram, directs mums towards support groups and allows mums to make connections and build communities with Sarah highlighting that many new friendships have been made through the club.
“They say it takes a village. That’s what I am trying to achieve. Building a community where it doesn’t matter what age and stage you are. At East Lothian Mums Walking Club, we are here to help. Mums need other mums and we all need some support, we need someone to say that we are doing well”.
New and old mums are encouraged to get involved no matter what stage of motherhood with the club being successfully spread via word of mouth and through social media platforms.
The success of East Lothian Mum’s Walking Club is continuing to grow, creating a small community of support across East Lothian. With the lack of support felt by many mum’s going through motherhood, Sarah Noon is creating a community, allowing for friendships to made and help received when needed.
With goals of spreading the walking groups into new housing developments and to raise funds for a ‘mum sanctuary’, Sarah and her club aims to provide support for every mum in East Lothian who needs it.
