School pupils in East Lothian are set to be given an extended October break to make up for missing out on an extra Bank Holiday marking the Queen’s funeral.

The day of the funeral, Monday, September 19, has been declared an official Bank Holiday across Britain however in East Lothian schools were already off as it is the date of the county’s September weekend.

Now the local authority has said it will move the local Monday holiday back to October 24 when teachers were due to return from the October holiday for a staff in-training day which will be moved back a day with pupils not returning until Wednesday October 26.

The new October holiday date will also apply to council offices, libraries and community centres.

The council said the proposed change is subject to formal approval at the next meeting if its cabinet on September 27.

Midlothian View asked Midlothian Council if they are considering a similar option. A spokesperson for the council said:

“I understand a proposal will be considered by councillors at the next council meeting on 4th October.”
