Edinburgh's Voi e-bikes
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
Following a successful launch in September, Swedish e-bike operator Voi is introducing 240 extra e-bikes to the existing 100-strong fleet.
In its first month, the scheme achieved over 15,000 individual trips by around 4,500 riders, covering almost 40,000 kilometres in total.
To meet demand, the scheme’s boundary is set to expand into the North of the city, including Leith, Meadowbank and Newhaven on October 31st. The 240 extra e-bikes will begin to be deployed that day, and rolled out in full from November 1st.
As well as the fleet and boundary expansion, Voi are introducing more parking locations within the existing boundary zone and the expanded boundary.
James Bolton, Voi’s UK General Manager, said:
“We are pleased to grow our service in Edinburgh, offering more people the chance to cycle affordably, sustainably and safely.
“Demand for Voi e-bikes has been fantastic so far. We are excited to increase our fleet and expand into new areas, working with the council to make sure we do so responsibly.”
Transport and Environment Convener for the City of Edinburgh Council, Stephen Jenkinson, said:
“I’m delighted that we’re moving to the next phase of expanding our cycle hire scheme. The figures we’ve seen speak for themselves in terms of uptake, with hundreds of journeys being made across our city each and every day.
“I’ve no doubt that the scheme will continue to go from strength to strength and before long everyone in Edinburgh will be able to take advantage of this accessible, affordable, and sustainable way of getting around.
“Our wider commitment to making our city a better place for everyone is evidenced in our ambitious City Mobility Plan alongside our commitment to tackling the climate emergency.”
The expansion is the first step to increase the fleet size to 800 by the end of the year to match the huge demand for e-bikes in the city.
