Sitting on a Cornflake

Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson

The ‘Brother Broke’ are back at the Fringe, showing their love and paying homage to the music of John Lennon and Paul McCartney through their historical live music show everyday at The Surgeons Hall’s TheSpace at 9:20pm.

The two brothers, Tom and Hugh Adams, specialise in the music of The Beatles and provide commentary surrounding the influences, origins and style behind the songs.

Paying homage to the musicians they add a blues and folk twist to the classics whilst discussing the history of the songs and the artists between playing important songs in The Beatles history.

The unique show combined Lennon and McCartney songs, demonstrating the masterclass and relationship between the artists in a creative way. The show of only voices, an acoustic guitar and a bass created a great sound in the small theatre within Surgeons Hall’s TheSpace.

In the room of no-more than 50 people the crowd seemed bored throughout with next to none singing along (only joining in when the two bothers on stage directed them to) and a couple leaving disappointed after only 10 minutes into the performance. Despite the dialogue in between songs being the essence of the show it almost ruined the performance with a boring delivery and bored looks on the performers faces, shown by the crowds engagement.

Despite the two brothers being skilled musicians, represented well in the musical aspect of the show, it was mainly focused on the historical dialogue making the show feel less of an engaging show and more of a classroom history lesson. Even though I learnt interesting facts I never knew it isn’t what you are looking for if you are in the market for an engaging show performing The Beetles songs as they should be, entertaining.

An overall look of the Brother Broke they seemed less of musicians and more people who want to share their love and appreciation for Lennon and McCartney.

‘Sitting on a Cornflake’ is a show for lovers of The Beetles but not a show if you are looking for an engaging show you would expect during The Fringe.

2/5, would not recommend.
