A study demonstrating the feasibility of using tram-trains to reopen Edinburgh’s South Suburban Railway (South Sub) to passengers has won “The Princess Royal Award for Emerging Engineers.”

Corey Boyle’s presentation won versus entries from 12 Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) regions in the UK and overseas. The award, presented by the ICE, celebrates the communication of outstanding engineering ideas, research, and best practice in project design.

At the ICE Award presentation Boyle dedicated the award to Natalia Salajska, a member of the project team who sadly passed away recently.

Tram Trains for Edinburgh warmly congratulates Corey Boyle, who led the student team at Heriot-Watt University that conducted the feasibility study and generated significant public interest in the proposal.

Tram Trains for Edinburgh, a new campaign group formed to advance the proposal, held a successful public meeting on 7 October 2025 in the Edinburgh City Chambers, where Boyle presented the findings of the study.

Rob Falcon, Chair of Tram Trains for Edinburgh, said:

“I am delighted that the Institution of Civil Engineers has recognised the quality of the work undertaken by the Heriot-Watt students. This can only strengthen the already strong case for using tram-trains to restart passenger services on the South Sub and connect to the current tram lines at Murrayfield.”

Corey Boyle said:

“I’m truly humbled and honoured to receive The Princess Royal Award for Emerging Engineers from the ICE. The work on the South Sub was a genuine team effort.

“I’m excited and optimistic about the future of reopening the South Sub. With Tram Trains for Edinburgh campaigning for its return and strong public support across the city, momentum continues to build. As a Morningside resident, I look forward to the day I can take a tram-train from my own street directly to Leith, Edinburgh Airport, or the beach at sunny Portobello.”
