Edinburgh Tram at St Andrew Square
Written by Midlothian View Reporter, Liam Eunson
Edinburgh’s multi award-winning tramway celebrated a major Tap On, Tap Off (TOTO) milestone this weekend, as Edinburgh Trams customers have now made over one million journeys using the TOTO contactless payment system since its launch on 19 May 2025.
The innovative system, which allows customers to simply tap their contactless card or device before boarding the tram and ‘Tap off’ when they leave the tram on the platform validators, has revolutionised how people travel across Edinburgh.
TOTO puts the customer first and offers passengers a seamless, stress-free way to pay for their journey, while also benefitting from an integrated daily and weekly cap across Edinburgh Trams and Lothian Buses.
The millionth journey coincides with the launch of Apple Pay Express Mode, which makes the use of TOTO even faster and more convenient for Apple Pay users.
Marilena Papadopoulou, Edinburgh Trams Head of Projects & Renewals, who oversaw the TOTO project launch, said:
“TOTO allows a seamless tram and bus travel across the city for residents, commuters, and visitors alike and reaching one million Tap On, Tap Off journeys in under six months is a fantastic achievement.
“The success of the system is a clear sign that our customers are embracing a smarter, more flexible travel in the Scottish capital.”
Since its introduction, TOTO has helped simplify tram and bus travel across the city, which proved invaluable during the operator’s busiest-ever summer season and peak travel times, speeding up boarding, and enhancing overall customer experience.
Marilena added:
“This milestone reflects the continued growth of tram usage across Edinburgh. We are committed to continue delivering sustainable ticketing options, and Tap On, Tap Off is helping us to achieve this, whilst also future proofing the tramway and how people travel across Edinburgh.”
This achievement follows Edinburgh Trams’ win at the Global Light Rail Awards, as they secured the ‘Richard Brown Best Customer Initiative’ award for TOTO earlier this month, further celebrating the successful launch of TOTO into the Scottish capital’s transport system.
