Charles Stamper's warehouse in Granton, Edinburgh

An Edinburgh business is to set up a distribution centre in Broxburn, potentially bringing 15 new jobs to the area.
Fruit and veg merchant Charles Stamper will pay West Lothian Council almost £400,000 for a site just over an acre in size in Broxburn.
A report to West Lothian Council’s Executive said the offer for the land at East Mains Industrial Estate “represents the best terms reasonably obtainable by the council.”
David Baird, the council’s property services manager, told the meeting: “The site was not required by the council for service delivery, so was put on the market for sale. No offers or expressions of interest were received from the community and there were no requests for community asset transfer.
“The best commercial offer- £380,000- received was from Edinburgh-based Charles Stamper Fruit and Veg Holdings Limited, (CSFVHL), who specialise in the distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables across the central belt and throughout Scotland.”
The family-owned company has been in operation for thirty-five years, and intends building a warehouse on the site to create a new base for its operations.
CSFVHL have existing partnerships with local firms and have indicated that they would intend using local contractors during the construction phase. They aim to prioritise local employment by recruiting at least 60% of staff from the surrounding area, and expect to create ten to fifteen new full-time positions over a five-year period.
A spokesperson for the council said: “The sale represents best value for the council as the highest potential capital receipt. All money raised from the sale of surplus property is reinvested back into the council to support essential services.”
