Provost Joe Wallace presents Jack Davidson with the award.

Jack Davidson proved to be an evergreen success by collecting three awards at the Midlothian Council Tenants Garden Competition.

Jack, 88, was presented with his gold certificates for best overall garden, best vegetable garden and best floral display by Provost, Councillor Joe Wallace at his home in Pathhead.

A seasoned competitor and heavily decorated gardener, Jack, who worked as a greenkeeper and parks department foreman for Midlothian Council before retiring, vowed he is aiming to carry on entering his garden into competitions.

Jack said: “Folk often ask me: When are you going to stop? I’m 89 in March, but I get so much enjoyment from it and it keeps me busy.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have won a lot of awards over the years and it is always nice to receive recognition for your hard work.”

The Provost, Councillor Joe Wallace says he was bowled over by Jack’s efforts and that the octogenarian’s green-fingered skills are an inspiration for everybody.

Councillor Wallace said: “I wish I had Jack’s green fingers – his gardening skills are second to none and it is fitting that he has received all these awards.

“I was delighted to be able to present Jack with the certificates and admire his garden; he has set a very high benchmark for everybody else to follow.
