The Midlothian Integration Joint Board (IJB) is often referred to in Midlothian View articles but the name is not particularly catchy or obvious as to what it is or does, so we thought we would write this explainer article.

Midlothian’s IJB is a partnership between Midlothian Council and NHS Lothian that works towards providing integrated health and social care services to the people of Midlothian. It was established under the Public Bodies (Joint Working) (Scotland) Act 2014 and is responsible for the planning, design, and delivery of these services.

The IJB is made up of representatives from Midlothian Council, NHS Lothian, and the Third Sector. Its aim is to bring together the expertise of these different sectors to provide a more efficient and effective service to the people of Midlothian. The board’s main focus is on delivering services that are tailored to the needs of the local community and are designed to improve health and wellbeing outcomes.

The IJB has a number of functions, including the development of strategic plans and the monitoring of service delivery. It is also responsible for the allocation of funding and the commissioning of services from a range of providers, including the NHS, the council, and the Third Sector.

One of the key principles of the IJB is person-centred care. This means that the services provided by the IJB are designed to meet the needs of individual patients and service users. The IJB also works to ensure that there is seamless integration between health and social care services. This is particularly important for people with complex needs who may require support from both the NHS and the council.

The IJB has a number of priority areas, including the prevention of ill health and the promotion of wellbeing, the improvement of care and support for older people, and the development of services that are tailored to the needs of children and young people. It also focuses on the integration of mental health and physical health services and the development of community-based services that are accessible to everyone.

The IJB is accountable to the Scottish Government, which sets the strategic direction for health and social care in Scotland. The IJB is required to submit an annual report to the government, which outlines its achievements and sets out its plans for the future.

So in conclusion, the Midlothian Integration Joint Board is a partnership between Midlothian Council and NHS Lothian that is responsible for the planning, design, and delivery of integrated health and social care services in the Midlothian area. The IJB works to ensure that services are tailored to the needs of individual patients and service users and that there is seamless integration between health and social care services. Its priority areas include the prevention of ill health, the promotion of wellbeing, and the development of services that are accessible to everyone.
